River Routes

EXPERT Matteo Balduzzi & Panayiotis Lamprou
DATES  03-06/11
LOCATION Onassis Cultural Center, Athens

Stop just looking at the surface and listen to the story of the ancient Ilisos river, flowing invisibly under the city of Athens after having been paved over decades ago. This four-day workshop will focus on sharing an approach which includes much more than taking a series of photographs of an urban setting. Archival material, maps, exchanging views with experts on urbanism are designed to be integrated in the project which will result from photographing on location; the purpose will be to depict the historical and environmental aspect of the matter or rather the mentality of a society in different phases as reflected in the river. Matteo Balduzzi, curator, and Panayiotis Lamprou, photographer, will be guiding participants in this process in order for all to detect the “routes” of the river, re-visit old images and create new ones with the potential of them becoming part of a larger project.

The Experts

Matteo Balduzzi

Born in 1969 in Milan, Italy, Matteo Balduzzi studied architecture and is a curator in the field of public art and photography, with a main focus in establishing relationships between people, landscape and collective memory.

He has been collaborating with the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Cinisello Balsamo for the past fifteen years, where he has curated numerous projects. Since 2018 he has been the Museum’s artistic program co-ordinator which is based on three pillars: Collections, Young Artists (and Curators), and Community. He is also responsible of the ABITARE project, a public commission promoted by the Italian Ministry of Culture.

During this last decade he has also worked on several public art and community-shared projects in different locations in Italy and internationally, independently and in collaboration with Stefano Laffi, while from 2011 till 2016 he curated photographic exhibitions and participated in projects on the transformation of the city of Milan for FORMA MERAVIGLI.

Since 2010 he has been teaching at the NABA Masters Program in Photography and Visual Design in Milan and lately also started teaching in the Istituto Europeo di Design (IDE) in Turin. He is a member of ARTINRETI, a working group on public-art, and is a founding member of the non-profit organization for contemporary art CAREOF, in Milan.

Panayiotis Lamprou

Born in 1975 in Athens, Greece, Panayiotis Lamprou is a contemporary artist. He studied history and aesthetics of photography at the Photographic Circle, Athens, and research, history and archiving of photography at the Centro di Ricerca e Archiviazione della Fotografia in Spilimbergo in Italy. His photographic approach stems from straight photography and his practice is tightly knit with the pursuit of showing the underlying sensitivities of subject matters whose presence is often obscured by preconceptions. Being fueled by an ‘active inertia’, he confronts complex issues, such authority and the state, mental illness, nudity and social norms with the intention of inviting a mode of broader understanding. Αttracted by Paradox and using suggestiveness as one of his main tools to delineate it, his thematic scope covers a wide spectrum currently focusing on intimate urbanism.

He has participated in several solo and group exhibitions and his work has been published in national and international editions such as La Strada “Regina Margherita”, “Photographic Aspects and Views”, “Tears of the Dream”, “Kafka der Bau”, “Naked Nude”, “Notes from Schinoussa”. In 2010, he won Second prize for the work “Portrait of my British Wife” of the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize, National Portrait Gallery, London. His works are included in private and public collections. Since 2014 he has also been collaborating with the non-government educational organization Buon Vento in Milan creating educational courses on art and photography. He currently lives in Athens, works as an artist, and is the Creative Director of COCO-MAT.
